Britain and America have secured a important trade agreement that will preserve no levies on British drug shipments going into the American market.

Key Provisions of the Accord

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has committed to increase spending on drugs through the NHS. This pledge secures that tariffs on these vital exports will stay at zero for a timeframe of 36 months.

This agreement is in response to previous threats to significantly raise duties on branded pharmaceutical products, with figures discussed as high as double the cost.

"This agreement with the Britain strengthens the international landscape for cutting-edge drugs and introduces long-overdue balance to American-British medicine commerce," an announcement said.

Trade Importance

Pharmaceuticals represent one of the the United Kingdom's biggest exports to the US, which is easily the biggest market for large British pharmaceutical firms.

Export figures indicate that in the year to the end of the third quarter, the UK sold medicines worth £11.1bn to the US. This amount represented nearly one-fifth of all goods exports in that timeframe.

"This agreement secures work, increases funding and facilitates the UK to establish itself as a international leader for medical research," the Business and Trade Secretary commented.

Key UK Commitments

The pact includes several specific commitments from the United Kingdom:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will raise the cost ceiling at which it deems new treatments to be too expensive by a quarter.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a aim to double overall health service expenditure on medicines from 0.3 percent of GDP to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Refund Ceiling: The sum pharmaceutical firms must refund to the NHS to prevent overspending will be restricted at fifteen percent. Last year, repayments topped 20%.

Industry Background

The pact follows a ongoing dispute between the sector and the UK government over spending levels and regulatory access.

This friction were exacerbated by claims that American consumers were paying several times more for the same drugs than patients in the other developed nations.

In recent months, several large manufacturing plans in the UK have been paused or cancelled, while multi-billion-dollar investments have been pledged toward US facilities.

The Science Minister stated that the NHS had to invest a greater share on medicines, noting that its expenditure on drugs had declined as a percentage of its overall budget over the past decade.
