TikTok is introducing a fresh option that permits them to cut down on the quantity of AI-made content appearing in their streams. This move comes as the service revealed that it now features more than 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.
Testing and Rollout
This change is being tested over the next few weeks before a global release. This development comes amid a surge in content created by AI, spurred by emerging content generation software.
AI Proliferation Online
It has been noted that almost a tenth of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a popular video site primarily display content made by AI. A significant portion of this content is classified as “AI slop”, a term for substandard, factory-style content that is frequently absurd or bizarre.
“We know from our community that many people enjoy content produced via AI tools, including computer-generated images to educational videos, and we aim to provide users the power to adjust the amount of that, based on their own likes,” commented a platform representative.
Volume and Proportions
The platform disclosed that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its network tagged as made with AI. Collectively, over 100 mn pieces of content are submitted to the platform every day, making clips made by AI a relatively small percentage of its overall inventory.
Customizing Your Feed
Viewers will be able to reduce or increase the volume of AI-generated videos they see by accessing the content preference setting in the application and choosing AI-made media. Further subjects that currently be controlled under the setting include current affairs, style, aesthetics, and movement.
Content Labeling and Policies
TikTok’s rules require creators to tag lifelike AI-made content, and it forbids dangerous AI impersonations of public figures or emergencies. Any realistic AI video that is without a tag can be deleted under its community policies.
In addition, the service will henceforth add an AI-generated label to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or identified by an collaborative effort for identifying artificial media. This measure is designed to stop users from trying to circumvent the labeling process.
AI Literacy Programs
TikTok is also introducing a $2 million awareness program for specialists and institutions to develop informative material about using AI responsibly. This initiative will support charitable organizations dedicated to teaching coding and technology.
Platform Protection
The video-sharing app has justified its safety measures, amid discussion over proposals to make redundant a large number of safety staff in the UK. It is planning to eliminate hundreds of positions in its user protection department in London, with labor groups and internet security professionals voicing alarm that people are being substituted by AI moderation.
A senior executive clarified that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by filtering out the most distressing content ahead of it is viewed by staff. The company reported a significant reduction in shocking and graphic content seen by human moderators over the past year due to reliance on its automated systems.
“We think that it’s essential to balance staff and AI to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s very important to limit contact with unsafe media as rapidly, which is why a lot of the machine support is making a difference operate efficiently.”
